Thinking about traveling to Cancun? Then this travelogue will give you some tips to help you plan a successful vacation! Flight, resort, and excursion information are all detailed below.
If you didn’t know…I am a member of the best sorority, Delta Sigma Theta! My line sister decided to have a destination wedding in Cancun and of course I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I booked my trip through Delta Vacations which included the flight and an all-inclusive resort. Unlimited food and drinks for the entire trip made it one of the most cost-efficient vacations I’ve ever had and I did not go over budget.
Flight + Resort = $966.
How did I get there?
I flew nonstop on a Delta flight. It took 2.5 hours to get there from Atlanta, GA.
Accommodations
I stayed at a beautiful resort called Now Sapphire Riviera. This was my first time at an all-inclusive resort and I am sure it will NOT be the last. Our room was nice and newly renovated. The resort had a main pool for everyone and a preferred pool area for adults only.
It had many restaurants but the only one worth mentioning is Lemongrass for Hibachi! The other food was decent, but the hibachi was delicious. I suggest making reservations for Lemongrass at least two weeks prior to your arrival since it is a reservation only restaurant and are typically full a week in advance. We lucked up and grabbed a reservation when we arrived because someone canceled theirs.
The beach water at the resort was filled with seaweed! Only two people got in the water during my entire stay there. However, the resort does a good job cleaning it up once the seaweed is on shore.
I would recommend this resort to anyone traveling to Cancun and looking for a relaxing, chill vacation.
Note: I’m pretty sure that we (those attending her wedding) were the only black folks there.
Excursions ($90 Total)
Prior to heading to Mexico, I booked an excursion through Viator which included roundtrip transportation from the hotel, Tulum Ruins, ATVs, and cenotes. Our group was picked up at 7am and we did not return to the hotel until around 6pm. Granted there were some major accidents on the highway that caused some delays, but the excursions are a full day’s worth.
Tulum Ruins
We started out at the Tulum Ruins where we learned a lot about the Mayan history. Please note that there may be photo ops with snakes when you arrive to the Ruins. I wish someone would have given me a heads up, but it’s probably best they didn’t because I would not have booked the excursion. My phobia is that real lol.
The excursion includes lunch provided by the company, but I highly recommend eating at Don Cafeto right next to Senor Frogs at the Tulum Ruins instead. The pico is soooooo spicy, but delicious. I ordered the shrimp tacos and added the spicy pico de gallo which made them perfecto!
Cenote
The cenote was absolutely beautiful and we had it all to ourselves so it was like a private pool in the middle of the jungle (see video at the end of the post). I have an iPhone XS Max so I can record under water, but I still purchased this case from Amazon so that I can have double protection and the strap to make sure I wouldn’t drop it in the water.
We also explored a cave. Without the flashlights it was pitch-black. It was scary, but worth it! Check out the pics below.
Adios – Goodbye
Gracias to the locals and staff at Now Sapphire for the hospitality. I tried my best to use Spanish to speak with them and in return they shared their culture and language with me. I had a great time in Cancun. The wedding was one of the most beautiful and lit events I’ve ever attended. The excursions made me step out of my comfort zone and created memories I will never forget!
Tips for Traveling to Cancun
Fill out the customs form online and print it so you do not have to hand-write it upon arrival in Mexico.
Learn some Spanish and try to immerse yourself in their culture.
Arrange airport transfers prior to arrival.
Bring cash and exchange it for pesos so you do not have to worry about conversions while shopping. If you don’t exchange for pesos, that’s fine too because most places take USD.
Wear sunscreen and continue to reapply it throughout the day because the sun is no joke!
If you decided to do water excursions, bring water shoes because the rocks are slippery and sometimes sharp.
If traveling out of the country isn’t in the budget this year then check out how to vacation for $500 or less!

I have yet to go to Mexico but I have it on a list. I wen to an all inclusive in DR a few years back and I fell in love. I know you don’t get the full culture side of the experience but it was so stress free. Thanks for the tips!

Definitely stress free! I advise leaving the resort so you get to experience the culture!
